5 Art Picks: Sedrick Huckaby | Barry Whistler | 35 Years of 500x

sederickEveryday Glory by Sedrick Huckaby, at the Valley House Gallery & Sculpture Garden - December 4: 6-8:30 p.m. 6616 Spring Valley Road, Dallas, Tx 75254.

I’ve written about Huckaby’s work before, which continues to evolve into stronger and more subtle explorations of color, tone, and texture, as images morph into abstractions that carry metaphoric grit.

lapStephen Lapthisophon and John Judd Lecture at the Dallas Museum of Art – December 5: 7:30-8:30 p.m. 1717 North Harwood Street, Dallas, Texas 75201.

Stephen Lapthisophon’s Concentrations exhibition at the DMA is a difficult, disarming, and labyrinthine installation, a series of riffs and improvisations that suggest dead end associations and tease-out an ever-elusive coherence. I keep thinking of the show as a kind of epistemological free jazz, a melding of conceptual, expressive, and improvisational techniques that demand pride of place for incoherence within the context of an exploration of meaning. Tonight Lapthisophon will be speaking about his work with the actor John Judd, who has been friends with the artist since the early 1970s.

corrisBAGGAGE by Michael Corris and Kelly Kroener at RE Gallery – December 6: 7-9 p.m. 1717 Gould Street, Dallas, Texas 75215.

For their second collaboration after The Dallas Collective, which exhibited at the Texas Biennial, artist, SMU professor, and former Art and Language collaborator, Michael Corris, and S.C.A.B.-associated artist Kelly Kroener have created hand bags fabricated out of digitized images, exhibited in vitrines created by Travis La Mothe. The visual content of the commodities are images from Corris’ artistic career, stretching back to work he created in the 1970s and focusing on a variety of theoretical and literary influences. One surface tension of the project is the object-based mash-up of art, language, and commodity. But another seems to be that of memory and the status of art remembered and forgotten, which seems particularly relevant in a contemporary art world that regularly churns through cycles, fads, and regurgitations of already-trodden aesthetic and conceptual terrain.

500Creative Differences: 35 Years at 500x at 500x December 7: 7-10 p.m. 500x Exposition Ave, Dallas, Texas 75226.

We just celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Dallas Contemporary, and this weekend 500x will host its own celebration of the same landmark birthday. The exhibition will feature a survey of artists who have participated over the years in the artist-run gallery, a vital and historic Texas institution, the oldest artist-run cooperative in the state. The year 1978 was a potent one in Dallas.

bokStudio Paintings by Gideon Bok, and Ship to shore: Photographs of Maine by Allison V. Smith, at the Barry Whistler Gallery - December 7: 6-8 p.m. 2909-B Canton Street, Dallas, Tx 75226.

The pairing of painter Gideon Bok and photographer Allison V. Smith is a particularly intriguing one for a few reasons. The first obvious one is that Smith’s photographs of Maine, where she spends much time when not in Dallas, will hang with the work of a Maine-based painter. But there is also an aesthetic and thematic contrast that may prove potent. Smith’s images are characterized by an evocative formality — pristine and suggestive, though occasionally anodyne. Bok trades on internal landscapes with visceral sizzle, renderings of his studio space which, in its constant flux and disheveled glory, is incorporated into a dialectic of material and conceptual contemplation.
