Mathew Posey’s latest work, Memphos!, debuting at his Ochre House in Expo Park, is about a magician who won’t let go to the fact that his kind of entertainment is out-of-fashion (sounds like The Illusionist). According to Lawson Taitte, the act features knife-throwing, bickering, and a terrible disappearing act “so awful it’s hilarious.”
Posey’s native authority as an actor makes the occasional jump into something a little deeper, truly mysterious, turn haunting. All kinds of literary stuff get thrown in, too. At one point Posey utters the magician’s line from Fellini’s 8½, “Asa nisi masa,” which is, of course, pig Latin for the Jungian “anima.”
