The New York Times has an obituary on Edmund Pillsbury, which lists some of the major acquisitions the Kimbell director brought to Fort Worth, including Picasso’s “Nude Combing Her Hair,” Velazquez’s “The Cardsharps,” and works by Caravaggio, Fra Angelico, Rubens, Cezanne, and Modrian.
Dallas now boasts work by a number of Pritzker Architecture Prize winners. How do you get the honor? Well, it helps to recommend yourself.

I’ve often wondered, despite the apparent bizarreness of the honor itself, is there another street in the world, other than Flora, that can boast of 4 winners?
I have never noticed that distinction being trumpeted by our CVB, but we now have buildings by successive winners (Nasher by Piano ’98, Winspear by Foster ’99, Wyly by Koolhaas ’00) next to Pei’s Meyerson. Not to mention several works including Thanksgiving Square by Philip Johnson (Pritzker ’79) and the upcoming Nat. History Museum by Thom Mayne (Pritzker ’05)
These buildings make us unique…in a good way.
