The Love Punch is a would-be farce that wheezes along like the respiratory systems of some members of its target audience of aging baby boomers, the same demographic that made The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel a hit a few years back. Likable stars Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson find themselves laboring to sell a broader sort of comedy. They play a long-divorced couple who rekindle their romance while plotting revenge on the evil French financier who stole their pensions.
While I might be talked into sampling a spinoff movie centered on Timothy Spall’s oddball character, the couple’s neighbor Jerry, the fact that the new X-Men movie requires less suspension of disbelief makes The Love Punch one long slog — and it’s only 90 minutes.
But will you like it? I’ve drawn up this helpful Venn diagram to identify the people most likely to walk away from the film smiling.
