On a Slow Art Week, Time to Take Stock of a Month’s Art Deluge

And here it is, the first real calm after the art storm that was the month of April. There are a handful of new art openings this weekend, but compared to the fervor of the last month or so, it’s a slow one. That said, I’m sure you, like me, haven’t seen everything that has opened over the past month. This weekend is the time to catch up.

In the meantime, why not use this moment to take a breather and look back on the few months that were. Luckily, the job’s already been done. In an article in Bad at Sports, Leigh Arnold describes the state of the local art scene in what promises to be the first in a series of columns which will offer “quick glimpses of the art world as it exists in smaller cities across the country and around the world.” It looks like Dallas is the first stop on the world tour, which, if true, really does speak to the accumulation of vibrations, the peripheral benefits of media shrapnel, and the trickle down promotional economics of all sorts of jingoistic hooray from every corner of our concrete berg. After reports in Art Forum, W, The New York Times, and elsewhere, Dallas has basked in a little art glow lately. Unlike some of those other pubs, Arnold is tasked with taking the temperature of DFW’s artistic activity, and she gets it right, touching on Deep Ellum Windows, DB14, The Reading Room, Oliver Francis Gallery, and more.
