Photo Essay: Raw and Exposed: The Overwhelming Taylor Kimbrough of Deep Throat

This past weekend, photographer Andi Harman caught the Deep Throat set at Rubber Gloves, which featured yet another dynamic performance by lead singer Taylor Kimbrough. That inspired Harman to put together this series of photos that capture the unique, raw talent of the singer and her unshakable onstage persona. About Kimbrough, Harman writes:

Every time I see Kimbrough perform, she pushes herself physically and emotionally — I’m convinced she is never “drained.” She is raw and exposed onstage and a live wire (but total sweetheart) offstage. She overwhelms and expresses unlike any other local frontperson. The band as a whole is incredibly talented. There’s a balance: the men behind her have technical prowess, and she brings the stage presence. She’s like a character from a graphic novel I would’ve read when I was a precociously eccentric preteen. The perceived duality of a performance artist doesn’t apply to her; she doesn’t juxtapose herself. When you know Kimbrough both on- and offstage, you know that what she presents isn’t fabricated. Her frenzy is an authentic release of something. I can’t tell if it’s anger or sadness or confusion, but whatever it is, it’s satisfying to witness.
