See Prince William at Denton is Burning Before He Moves To Los Angeles

Back in October we told you about local DJ Prince William aka Will Boston selling out a show in Los Angeles, which coincided with his bass-heavy, Brooklyn/Dallas-based label venture Fade To Mind. That’s the attention-garnering imprint he started with Fool’s Gold recording artist, Kingdom that has had a respectable share Well, unsurprisingly, that will soon be a Brooklyn/Los Angeles-based label, since the Prince will soon make LA his home.

Dallas will certainly miss him, and it was an honor to have him at our “High Brow/Low Brow” event last November. That whole “high brow/low brow” thing is so “hot” these days, isn’t? A couple of things about that: First of all, make sure you take extra care to nail that “high brow” part before you dive right into it. Anybody can do “low brow,” but having class doesn’t come easy for everyone. Also, make sure you have read this before you go spouting off about such matters.

But before I get too off-topic: Make sure you catch Prince William at the LGTBQI-friendly “Denton is Burning” weekly this evening at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio. He’ll be joined by the always informative (on and off the decks), Austin Shook. It all starts at 10 pm.

It could very well be one of your last chances to see Prince William in Denton, since appearances by him have been relatively rare in the past few years. When I spoke with the DJ last fall, he almost made me a little nostalgic about those days, something I try to avoid:

When I ask about playing the now-legendary 8th Continent venue on behalf of myself and a collective of other music bloggers back in 2007, however, Prince William seems to have fond memories. It was an event that was doomed from the beginning; a “music awards celebration” that was shut down by the police twice; first at Denton’s Fra House and then at the 8th Continent. In a symbolic gesture of solidarity that was always in the air at the time, two different venues, including the now defunct Secret Headquarters stepped in to host the temporarily homeless acts. This was despite the fact that neither establishment had booked, or even would have booked the talent otherwise. Prince William’s lineup was understandably stopped by the unfortunate timing of some bottles thrown at a moving train, surely violating several state and federal laws in the process. Somewhat foolishly, I ask if William even remembers. “I think that set that night at 8th Continent was one of the best nights I have ever had DJing; of course I remember it. Everyone left that party soaking wet.”

Well, it might not be that wild, but it’s still worth stopping by. If only to see one of the true Dallas DJ greats before he’s no longer local, and you’ll have to stand in line to see him play a homecoming set at Rio Room on a Fade To Mind showcase tour at some point in the future.

Elsewhere this evening:

Last week I was shocked to see no Boxcar Bandits at Dan’s on Monday, so there wasn’t much of a crowd. Good to see them back this evening, as their ability to draw on a traditionally dead night is impressive.
