By now it’s probably apparent that I’m not one for supporting something simply because it’s “local.” Perhaps naively, I assume that quality and style come first in the eyes and ears of any thinking person, as opposed to championing something simply because it’s sitting right next to you.
That being said, the two video teasers that the 35 Denton crew have assembled ahead of their March festival have aggressively (and understandably) taken the local angle and made it work for them by having local groups cover the work of some of their headliners. It would be a dubious task for many North Texas artists, but they’ve managed to do it with seeming ease.
First, there was the Shiny Around The Edges cover of Built To Spill’s “Twin Falls” which we told you about last month. Now, in anticipation of the newly-announced addition of the Dum Dum Girls to the lineup comes a stripped-down, radically reworked version of that group’s “Bhang Bhang, I’m a Burnout.” This time it’s performed by Denton’s underrated, bluesy solo act Dim Locator, aka Will Kapinos (that’s perhaps the only time I’ll call a blues-leaning solo guitarist “underrated”). Though the Dum Dum Girls themselves can range anywhere from decidedly up-tempo to deliberate and sad, Dim Locator puts a nasty spin on the pop number, complete with appropriately extended drawl and distorted slide. The effect is one that makes you reconsider the track altogether, completely stripping its Shop Assistants origins. In other words, Kapinos moves the song’s mood from “chipper girl group hanging at the Scottish pub” to “lone drunk in a Texas bar.”
The Dum Dum Girls are only one of quite a few acts announced today. Drone-and-doom duo Om, perhaps the biggest name on the list, was formed by members of both Sleep and Grails, legends in their own right. This should save at least some local record-heads a trip to some of the far-flung locales in which Om is known for performing.
And as with all announcement days from here on out, 35 D is dropping the ticket price for today only. You can now purchase a four-day pass for $50.
The rest of the list is as follows, and the aforementioned video is below:
