Over on the Dallas Morning News, Lawson Taitte has a piece on Shakespeare Dallas‘ latest production, Cyrano de Bergerac, written by someone not named Shakespeare. Taitte says the switch up is welcome, given that other companies in the area are producing a lot of fine Shakespeare and almost no one else is doing big plays from the past by anyone else. Shakespeare Dallas’ producing and artistic director, Raphael Parry, says he has long loved Cyrano, which explains the choice of this particular work. He’s directing it himself.”

Cyrano opens tonight.

  1. Saw the Friday night performance. It was marred by sound problems, including several microphones that kept dropping out, wildly uneven volumes between different characters, and, most disconcertingly, the sound of backstage technical crew members whispering to each other and giving instructions. Gusts of wind threatened to dangerously bring down a couple of the more modest set elements.

However, the first act in particular was triumphant! Cyrano had magnetic stage presence and near perfect delivery. It was a real pleasure to behold his antics. If the crew can polish it just a bit and solve the technical issues, they’ll have a highly impressive production on their hands.
