FRIDAY
Sievert/Reteris/Kashioboy/Pixyjunket/Mysterious H/Peopleodian (Hailey’s): Chiptune themed show, so if you’re one of those people that hates that “Nintendo music,” avoid this at all costs. Chiptune and 8-bit inspired music isn’t nearly as prevalent as it was a few years ago, so you have less to complain about.
Woodsman/Tjutjuna/The Black Ryder/Florene/Sunnybrook (Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio)
Glamorama with Blake Ward (Beauty Bar)
Peelander-Z/Anamanaguchi/Leg Sweeper (The Loft)
Floor/The Black Ryder/Mammoth Grinder (Sons Of Hermann Hall)
New Science Projects/Dim Locator (The Hydrant)
Woot! (Vietnam Restaurant): So this quickly-rising and unique Friday weekly promises no less than thirteen genres on the invite including:
DUB,DUBSTEP,HIPHOP,HOUSE,CUMBIA,MOOMBAHTON,REGGAE,
TOP40,DIRTYSOUTH.HIPHOP,FUNK,ELECTRO,DISCO…
That’s downright intimidating. To top it all off, DJ Woodtronic AKA Reid Robinson will be playing “Asian A’Gogo, Bollywood, and J-Pop” tracks. Robinson hosts the Sonic Assembly Power Hour on KNON (along with DJ Sista Whitenoise) and plays everything from Dan The Automator to Shiny Around The Edges. By the way, be very careful when searching “Asian A’Gogo” or any other somewhat exploitative genre name.
SATURDAY
Crystal Stilts/The Geman Measles/Ethereal and the Queer Show/Sealion (Club Dada)
Arcade Fire/Okkervil River/Schmillion (Gexa Energy Pavillion): Meanwhile at the backstage area of Gexa Engergy Pavillion specifically set aside for unjustifiably smug pop music writers: “Oh, remember when Arcade Fire won a grammy? Me too. It was so hilarious when all of those completely ignorant mainstreamers didn’t know who they were. Remember that? Haha. They were angry because they thought Eminem’s Recovery was “robbed.” So clueless of them, ya know? And then all of us extremely educated fans that know SO much about the history of popular music got to laugh at all of the clueless minions of middle America, with our great taste and special insight into popular yet pedestrian, Billboard topping indie rock. What a riot!”
Wild//Tribe/Dead Line/Life Erased/Brain Sore (Rubber Gloves)
Pastime Tavern’s 74th Anniversary with Flowers of God/Here Holy Spain/Tokyo Tapeworm/Followed By Static/Luna Matto/PVC Street Gang/Wanz Dover/Marriage Material (Pastime Tavern)
Lollipop Shoppe with Dr. Funkenstein/DJ Patty Love/Travis Box (Fallout Lounge)
SUNDAY
Lost Generation with Wanz/Keith P/Mr. Rid (Arcade Bar): I had the pleasure of visiting the Arcade Bar for the first time recently, after kindly being asked to select some records for this event. It’s terribly easy to overlook, since the more well-known Balcony Club is just upstairs; which is obvious, it being the balcony and all.
But don’t sleep on The Arcade Bar, as the intimate setting and friendly atmosphere made it that perfect mix of too nice to be a proper dive and too down-to-earth to be a proper lounge. Maybe I should trademark that.
Tonight should be solid due to Keith P.’s grip on dark and moody music, Mr. Rid’s sense of history, and Dover’s zeal for just about everything.
Boogie Down With DJ G/Rufus P Funk/Mr. Daishiki Jones (Fallout Lounge)
Crocodiles/Sleepy Sun/White Hills/Tang Lung (Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio): Now in its fourth year, the spillover from The Austin Psych Fest has only become more and more pronounced, which sort of makes you wonder: Is Dallas-Fort Worth’s sole reason for scoring shows just a siphon off of whatever Austin happens to be doing on any given weekend? If you include South By Southwest, Chaos In Tejas, Austin City Limits, and Austin Psych Fest, Fun Fun Fest etc., this is seriously a year-round phenomenon.
Photographer Kyle LaValley (warning: you need flash to see this) will be handling “life’s little moment” duties for the event and I really need to have interview the artist to ask which ISO settings are preferable for making grimy basement DIY shows look like they took place in a Uptown lounge.
