Out Last Night: The Netherfriends, Eyes Around, and Civil Twilight

What I love about a petite venue like The Loft is its ability to really tune into the “woo spectrum.”

There’s the “individual woo.” This woo is achieved by young artists like last night’s first opener, The Netherfriends. Shawn Rosenblatt only had time for a few songs but magic was made with his makeshift band consisting of a portable, electric drum set and miniature, green keyboard. He also worked the mountain man beard very well for man of such small frame. After repeatedly gyrating around stage, flaying his excited skinny arms, he received a group of individual audience woo’s and loved it.

There’s the “awaited woo.” Eyes Around immediately broke into an aggressive set. Lead singer Michael Donohue’s strong suit seemed to be moaning repetitive pitches into the mic. It didn’t matter his lyrics were inaudible; I liked the moaning more. But drummer Matt Thomas needed to calm down on the tongue lashing. His motorcycle mustache says enough. They were granted with the “awaited woo” before each song as the crowd acknowledged that they knew what song was coming up, and they liked it.

Finally there’s the “wound up woo.” By 10pm The Loft was packed as Civil Twilight headed on stage. Lead singer Steven McKellar put on his guitar with a boyish grin, soaking in every wound up woo from loyal fans as he admitted it was good to be back in Dallas. McKellar was very sensual onstage, seducing the crowd as he grinded into his guitar and held elongated looks into the audience.  He received some squeals after he literally dipped his head into the row of women up front, singing in their ears. And it was women, not girls, that turned to each other with excited grins as McKellar and his brother began grinding their guitars in unison.

  2. An amazing time was had by all. Yes, we women here in Dallas def were swooning. I only went to see Civil Twilight, (3rd time in two years, here in Dallas!) but was astonished by Shawn and his journey. Eyes Around is def loud and has a following. The LOFT is my new fav digs.
